Awardee Testimonials from the Singapore Logistics Association Awards
The Singapore Logistics Association Awards are granted to the top three graduates of the Bachelor of Science (Logistics and Supply Chain Management) programme at the Singapore University of Social Sciences.
We extend our congratulations to the following awardees who recently graduated from the programme:
- Chan Shao Yang (Gold Award)
- Ong Ming Jie, Jackson (Silver Award)
- Chua Kailun Donavan (Bronze Award)
Here's what these awardees had to say:
Chan Shao Yang shares, "Previously, I graduated from Nanyang Polytechnic, and I remember starkly how demoralized I felt by my Year 1 Polytechnic transcript – a dismal GPA of 1.7 / 4.0. As a mischievous teenager, I found no interest in studying and undertook a dual specialization in Supply Chain Management and entrepreneurship during my second year. As my curiosity and affinity towards SCM grew, I eventually made it into SUSS. My decision to embark on the relatively esoteric field of SCM is rooted not only in my educational and internship experiences with the industry but also in my conviction that supply chains represent Singapore’s source of prosperity. Today, I joined a local supply chain company, YCH Group. The award represents the catalytic piece that connects mentorship, profession, and education of my journey thus far and as I progress. Moreover, this award offers some financial aid for a Master’s degree in SCM which I intend to pursue in the very near future. Building a professional career in the supply chain industry is nothing short of exciting with the sheer plurality of opportunities and roles available. Having confirmed my interest in logistics and innovations in SCM (i.e., automation) through my academic and professional experiences in the industry, I aim to be a proactive shaper in the industry to create efficient and sustainable supply chains of the future. I truly appreciate this generous financial support."
Ong Ming Jie, Jackson, reflects on his journey, "Prior to university, I was the antonym of what most would consider a 'role model student', from being at risk of dropping out from express stream in secondary school to scoring a GPA of 2.26 during polytechnic, I did not place any importance towards my studies. With academic results like these, there wasn’t many options available after polytechnic and coming from a humble family background, I could not afford a private university education. During army, I was contemplating to enter the workforce without a degree but could not rid the lingering thought of how that would limit my career, luckily, I stumbled upon this part-time programme which is subsidized by the government and allows me to fund my education through my full-time income. The realization of the importance of education pushes me to study hard and I was awarded the SUSS-SAFRA SPONSPORSHIP AWARD in Year 2020. Also, by applying the knowledge I acquired in school to my full-time job, I was able to solve real-world problems which lead to significant progression in my career. I am deeply honored to be a recipient of this award. This award affirms me that I am striving towards the right direction and acknowledges my efforts which motivates me to continue placing the same level of dedication to all my future endeavors. As a recipient of this award also exemplify to the new and current students of this programme that excellence can be achieved by having the right mindset and dedication regardless of education and financial background. Working in the Logistics and Supply Chain industry during the course of this programme for the past 5 years, the companies that I worked with all struggles to accurately and reliably measure the performance of their operations and supply chain, hence the importance of data analytics has become increasingly clear to me. Collecting and transforming data into insights, allows companies to make better informed decision which can translate to reduction in cost, increasing efficiency etc. Therefore, I am currently pursuing further education in data analytics which I hope can complement my skillset in Logistics and Supply Chain to help the companies I work for make better informed decisions with regards to their supply chains."
Chua Kailun Donavan expresses his gratitude, saying, "I am deeply honoured to be one of the recipients of the Singapore Logistics Association Bronze Award in Convocation 2023. I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude for the generous support you and your organisation provided. Your organization’s contribution has made a significant impact on my educational journey and has inspired me to strive for excellence. I hail from a science background, having taken pure sciences in Secondary School and studied Biotechnology at the Diploma level. Four years ago, I took a leap of faith to pursue a degree in Supply Chain Management thus, receiving this award has been incredibly meaningful for me. It served as a powerful affirmation of my dedication and hard work, reinforcing my belief in the importance of education, excellence, and my choice of career path. The significance of this award goes beyond the monetary value. It has boosted my confidence and motivated me to excel academically. This has not only helped me achieve my educational goals but has also instilled in me a sense of responsibility to give back to society. I am determined to make the most out of this opportunity and contribute positively to the logistics industry and the community. Currently, I am pursuing a career in Global Supply Chain at Dyson. I am heavily involved in the Global Logistics digital transformation process to transform Dyson’s end-to-end logistics operations, improving efficiency, visibility, and productivity. With the knowledge and skills I have gained during my studies, I aspire to push the frontier of the logistics industry, harness the advancement in technology to bring about optimization opportunities, and enable Singapore’s world-class supply chain operation to achieve its sustainability targets. I am dedicated to working hard, making a difference, and eventually giving back to society by providing mentorship to future aspirants who are looking to break into the supply chain industry."
